Step out of your comfort zone and join in this challenging and fun series of design classes to produce unique pieces of work whilst learning about colour and design principles. Suitable for nervous beginners in design!

One Day Workshop

Sunday 1st August 2010 with Pat Archibald


Experiment with various fabrics and embellishing techniques to produce a themed sketchbook or photograph album cover with a unique stitched cord for the closure. Use some of your own photographs or postcards for colour inspiration for your fabrics and threads and decorate with exotic beads and findings from your collection.

"Linked Landscapes" Four Day Workshop

Monday 2 August to Thursday 5 Aug


This is a design workshop which is suitable for the keen quilter (not necessarily advanced) with an interest in design. It will also be a follow on from her 5 day workshop (Travels From Colour & Cloth to Quilt) that has taken place here with huge success twice in 2009.
Cost £380 Pat’s description of this course is - "This four day course continues the landscape theme from the first course (although it is not necessary to have come to the first course). I will introduce you to the idea of linking two landscapes within the one quilted piece. We will play with colour to set an intriguing atmosphere and balance. Techniques will include raw edge appliqu�, bondaweb appliqu�, and embellishing the finished piece with paint, quilting and stitch. A good understanding of basic rotary cutting techniques and your sewing machine would be helpful."
Pat will be giving an illustrated talk in the evening of Tuesday 3 August which is included in the cost of the workshop but will be open to local quilters to attend. The title of the presentation is ‘Colour’. Please note that, for those of you who like pottery or who have admired some of the pottery I have, this workshop sits neatly in between the two Potfests we have here in Penrith. Potfest in the Park is Friday 31 July to Sunday 1 August (slightly more arty). Potfest in the Pens is Friday 6 August to Sunday 8 August 2010.

Four Day Workshop - Travels From Colour & Cloth to Quilt

Monday 8 November to Thursday 11 November 2010

A 4 day workshop which will enable you to create a meaningful quilted and stitched textile from your own inspirational source looking at colour, mood, atmosphere and symbolism relating to landscapes.

Pat taught this workshop here at Quiltworks twice in 2009 and the work that was produced was outstanding.

This workshop begins with an evening meal on Sunday 8th November and ends Thursday afternoon between 4pm and 5pm. The cost of this workshop is £380.

Pat will be giving an illustrated talk in the evening of Tuesday 9 November which is included in the cost of the workshop but will be open to local quilters to attend. The title of the presentation is ‘Around The World In 80 Quilts.’

Wednesday/Friday 8th-10th September 2010 "Playing on the Surface"
Participants will create an abstract design while improving their machine embroidery and appliqu� skills. The class begins with a segment on design principles and advice on how to choose stunning and effective colour combinations. Breaking up the background into many smaller segments, students move on to decorate the surface of each one with a myriad of shapes, providing extra detail with machine embroidery. Towards the end of the class, instruction is given for 'easy to master' construction techniques and quilting designs will be discussed. Based on the skills used to create 'Kimberley Mystique' the wall hangings produced in this workshop will definitely be ‘one of a kind’ This workshop begins with an evening meal on Wednesday 8 September and ends Friday afternoon between 4pm and 5pm. The cost of this workshop is £200.

Friday/Sunday 10th-12th September "Light Up Your Landscape"
This workshop is one that Gloria has never taught in the UK before. Fusing small squares, rectangles or diamonds of fabric, students will build up a landscape background that is dramatic and visually appealing. Design principles including perspective and focal point will be outlined and a variety of colour schemes will be displayed and discussed. Participants will then design their own wall hanging working from a photo, sketch or picture. Fusing, invisible machine appliqu�, free motion stitching and quilting techniques will be included. This workshop is suitable for new and experienced quilters with patterns and hand dyed and painted fabrics available in class. Please bring a photo or sketch as inspiration. A simple scene with a beautiful or dramatic sunset sky and silhouette foreground is the most appropriate for this class. This workshop begins with an evening meal on Friday 10th September and ends Sunday afternoon between 4pm and 5pm. The cost of this workshop is £200.
